Sports Medicine Fellowship

DMC Sports Medicine Fellowship Program

The DMC Detroit Sports Medicine Fellowship Program is designed for board eligible orthopaedic surgeons who wish to specialize in sports medicine.

The Program offers an extremely comprehensive package of benefits. Four Rotations of three-months each with exceptional, board certified, fellowship trained sports medicine orthopaedic surgeons. Technical aspects of surgical intervention are developed in the departmental bio-skills laboratory and operating room under direct supervision of the faculty. Fellows participate in the development of the appropriate prescription of the rehabilitation program, the conduct of the rehabilitation and the assessment of the therapeutic value of the program. Fellows have direct contact with professional athletic teams including the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons under the direction of a faculty member. Fellows attend Spring Training in
Lakeland, Florida to help faculty members perform preseason physicals. Fellows have their own once a week half day clinic for 3 months supervised by an attending. Dedicated weekly and monthly conferences including monthly sports medicine journal club, local annual Sports Medicine Symposium and annual AOSSM Meeting.

Rotations

Four, three-month rotations allow our Fellows to closely work with all nine faculty members throughout the fellowship year. Rotations include: A three month rotation at the DMC Surgery Hospital and Beaumont Hospital provides the fellows with exposure to Dr. Stephen Lemos and Dr. Matthew Siskosky. Dr. Jefferey Michaelson, Dr. Sean Bak and Dr. Todd Frush will provide the fellow with a high volume of patients with many common sports injuries and procedures while on a 3 month rotation at Providence Hospital. Dr. Douglas Plagens and Dr. Marc Milia provide knee and shoulder sports expertise as well as insight into a general/sports practice in a community setting with academic affiliation.  This is a 3-month rotation, predominantly based at Oakwood Hospital and the related outpatient surgery center. Dr. Henry Goitz, Co-Program Director and Dr. Jason Holcomb provide the operative and clinical experience on this rotation working out of the DMC Surgery Hospital, Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan and Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital.

Research

Fellows are required to complete at least one clinical or basic science research study during their one year tenure. The goal is to complete a quality study to be published in a peer-reviewed journal and presented at a meeting appropriate to the content of the study (i.e. Shoulder and Elbow, AOSSM, AANA, etc.).   The Fellowship Director holds the belief that science and scientific inquiry is about answering questions.  We develop questions and go about finding ways to answer them.  Because of this our research is often collaborative as we seek out labs that have the facilities to assist us in answering our questions. Dedicated research staff coordinate and assists our fellows on completing their projects.

Professional Teams/Sports Event Coverage

Fellows have direct contact with professional athletic teams including the Detroit Tigers under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Lemos and Dr. Jefferey Michaelson. The Detroit Red Wings supervised by Dr. Douglas Plagens, and the Detroit Pistons directed by Dr.  Stephen Lemos.  Working with the Detroit Tigers, fellows help perform Winter and Spring Training pre-participation physicals and provide orthopaedic coverage at the Lakeland, Florida Spring Training site.  While working with the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings fellows help perform pre-participation physicals.  The fellows have game coverage opportunities with all of the above teams.

Fellows will also cover their “own” high school team throughout their fellowship year and participate in event coverage such as the Detroit Marathon, Celebrity Wheelchair Basketball Game, and sports specific boot camps in our local communities.
