October 14, 2009 - Detroit Receiving Hospital Earns Magnet Designation; Prestigious Honor Earned by Few Hospitals in the Nation

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has granted DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital (DRH) Magnet® recognition for excellence in nursing, the most prestigious award in nursing.  Five percent of all U. S. hospitals have achieved this status.

“We have always known that our nurses are among the best in the nation, and this recognition by an outside accreditation organization confirms it,” stated Iris Taylor, Ph.D., MSN, RN president of DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital. “This is an outstanding achievement for Detroit Receiving Hospital.”

“The Magnet Recognition Program® is the highest standard of excellence in nursing and is granted to hospitals that exceed professional standards in nursing education and practice,” stated Deborah Leblanc, vice president of patient care services at Detroit Receiving Hospital.  “The recognition is a national honor of nursing’s best practices and leadership.”

In Michigan, nine health care organizations have been honored by the Magnet Recognition Program. Only three of those are located in Southeastern Michigan.  DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan, in Detroit, and William Beaumont Hospital, in Royal Oak.

More than 20 years of research indicates there are clear benefits to the communities served by Magnet recognized organizations:

●   Improved patient safety

●   Shorter hospital stays

●   Fewer medical complications

●   Lower mortality rates

●   Higher patient satisfaction

The term “Magnet” came from a study conducted by the American Academy of Nursing's (AAN) Task Force. In that study, participating hospitals were asked to identify and describe variables that created an environment which attracted and retained well-qualified nurses who promoted quality patient, resident and client care. These participating institutions were described as “magnet” hospitals because of their ability to attract and retain professional nurses.

Detroit Receiving Hospital submitted more than 2,000 pages of documentation for review in April of 2009.  The hospital scored in the range of “excellence” and was asked for “no additional documentation”. Over 60% of hospital applicants are required to submit more paperwork.

The Magnet Recognition Program is based on quality indicators and standards of nursing practice as defined in the newly revised 3rd edition of the ANA Nursing Administration:  Scope & Standards of Practice (2009).  The designation process includes the appraisal of qualitative factors in nursing. These factors, referred to as “Forces of Magnetism” were first identified through research conducted in 1983.

Receiving Hospital’s Journey to Magnet Excellence™ began in November 2007 and included the application and documentation stages, followed by the three-day site visit from ANCC representatives this past August.  During the final phase of the process, appraisers submitted a report to the ANCC’s Commission on Magnet Recognition Program for review. Detroit Receiving Hospital’s Magnet status is valid for four years.
