Electronic Recordkeeping Boosts Patient Safety, Saves DMC More Than $5 million – For Second Straight Year

The Detroit Medical Center (DMC) achieved significant improvements in patient safety and quality of care, while also saving more than $5 million in costs last year, thanks to efficiencies created by its system-wide Electronic Medical Record (EMR).  This system manages nearly all of the DMC’s patient health information via new computer-based technology.

For the eight hospitals in the DMC system, it was the second year in a row in which computer-based healthcare information processing created major improvements in quality of care and cost-savings.

Three Detroit Health Care Institutions to Require Flu Vaccinations for Employees Who Work in Patient Care Areas

DETROIT – Henry Ford Health System, Detroit Medical Center and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center are requiring employees who work in patient care areas, including high-risk areas, to receive an annual flu vaccination or wear a surgical mask while working in close proximity to patients.

Detroit Receiving Hospital’s Board of Trustees has approved the appointment of Reginald J. Eadie, M.D., to be the next president of DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital. Dr. Eadie, a board certified emergency medicine physician, will assume his new role on July 26, 2010. He succeeds current president Iris Taylor, Ph.D., R.N. who was appointed to Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Chief Business Officer last month.

A final agreement signed early today paves the way for the purchase of the eight-hospital Detroit Medical Center by Vanguard Health Systems based in Nashville. The acquisition originally announced in March moves one step closer to completion with the final purchase and sale agreements.

DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan ranks among the nation’s top 30 hospitals in the U.S.News & World Report’s 2010-11 edition of Best Children’s Hospitals. As a major referral center for all aspects of pediatric cardiology and having performed more pediatric heart transplants than any other hospital in the state, the Children’s Hospital of Michigan has been recognized among the best for heart and heart surgery.
