How to Use the Food Pyramid
Here are tips for incorporating the food pyramid into your daily meal planning:

Plan meals from the base of the pyramid up, with the emphasis on breads and grains, vegetables and fruits.

Don't plan menus around meat. Learn to use meat as a side dish rather than an entree.

Rethink your favorite foods. If you like steak, serve it in small chunks, perhaps as shish kebab served on rice.

Make healthy choices within each food group, such as whole-grain breads, low-fat or nonfat dairy products and lean meat.

Snack on foods from the pyramid's lower levels.
