How to Use the Food Pyramid

Here are tips for incorporating the food pyramid into your daily meal planning:

  • Plan meals from the base of the pyramid up, with the emphasis on breads and grains, vegetables and fruits.

  • Don't plan menus around meat. Learn to use meat as a side dish rather than an entree.

  • Rethink your favorite foods. If you like steak, serve it in small chunks, perhaps as shish kebab served on rice.

  • Make healthy choices within each food group, such as whole-grain breads, low-fat or nonfat dairy products and lean meat.

  • Snack on foods from the pyramid's lower levels.
