To dance is to live. To live in pain.stinks. So why do so many dancers live in pain?
Pain is your body's alert system to tell you when something is wrong. But pain also affects the body by inhibiting muscle activity, making them fire slower and contract with less strength.
Pain also triggers spasm, which reduces range of motion. Muscle spasm is almost always secondary to another cause or trigger, but can cause pain itself. So pain can influence how a dancer dances.
But some people tolerate pain more than others. So then, how much pain can you dance? Knowing the cause of pain is most important, such as:
Overuse: Nearing a recital, needing to cram in rehearsal time, some people push the hours too much and do not give enough time for the body to recover.
- Acute injury: Falling down hard, twisting a joint, slipping and pulling a muscle, many acute injuries have spasm as well.
- Mechanical: When structural problems develop, pain comes from areas which compensate for the problem, including malalignment, reduced range of motion, tight segments of the spine, or a short leg.
- Technique: Improper technique is the most common cause of dance injury. This also can be from doing dance techniques that are out of the dancer's ability, or from a choreographer asking too much from that level of dancer.
Remember, your body feels pain for a reason. Finding out that reason may be enough to treat it, and still dance!

Immediate Access to a DMC Sports Medicine Specialist!
A Sports Medicine Specialist is a physician who is trained to prevent, diagnose, and treat various musculoskeletal problems and other injuries or issues related to sports and exercise. A Sports Medicine specialist is usually a primary care physician or orthopedist who has extra training in sports medicine. Patients do not have to be athletes to be seen by a sports medicine doctor. In fact, sports medicine specialists evaluate and manage a variety of conditions, for example: arthritis, back pain, tendonitis, concussions, and exercise-induced asthma, just to name a few. DMC Sports Medicine Specialists see everyone as an athlete, but understand that all are at different levels.
